After the urban business of Venice it was wonderful to spend our night on the way to Pompeii in the little village of Assisi. This small village of only 1000 is atop a hill overlooking beautiful countryside! We had a hotel room with a window looking out over the valley. St Francis was born and died here and it was here that the Pope built a basilica in his honor after he was made a saint in 1228 (2 years after he died). The main part of the church is still in that 1200 style with heavy, thick walls covered with frescos painted in plaster (no photos were allowed).
