Last night, on the way home from the light show, I stepped into the square in front of St Peter’s just to see it lit up - and then I went over at 7:30 this morning to worship inside(and I stumbled on an American service!). Here are pics of last night and this AM.
About my street! I thought it was worth sharing a bit more so I took some pics this morning for show and tell. The apartment is up a steep (STEEP) hill which leads down to just across from an entrance to St Peter’s Square. If you look at the pic of the street (just by our apartment) you can see the top of a white building with statues on it - if you compare that to the upper pic of St Peter’s facade , you can tell that what I see from in front of my apartment is the top front of St Peter’s. As I walked on the street, I passed this cardinal on his way to work! We really are right by the Vatican!! I’ve also included a clearer view of the old Roman city wall just across the street from us.
After the heat of day had passed I set off up our street to the parks that commemorate Garabaldi and the defense of Rome against Napoleon in 1870. To get there I followed that Roman Wall south. It was built in 271 AD and is 11 feet thick! It had never been breached until Napoleon’s artillary broke through in 1870.
I took it easy on Friday with a shorter walk than usual - over past St Peters and then down to the Tiber River (which is always a muddy brown between tall walled banks which prevent flooding of the city). To get back to the apartment I took our usual route through a tunnel under some major roads.
